Healthy sleep is associated with cognitive function, memory, and emotional
regulation.1,2,3 Sleep goals often include amount of sleep, initiating and
maintaining sleep, awakening refreshed, and more time in restorative sleep.
Cognitive behavioral therapy is often the recommended first-line intervention
for occasional sleep difficulty due to its efficacy and minimal side effects;4,5
however, this is limited to availability of trained therapists. Other approaches to
help with occasional sleeplessness may include modulators of neurotransmitters,
may be heavily sedating, or result in dependence or unwanted effects. Other
interventions may cause daytime sleepiness the day following administration or
changes in cognition.6,7,8
Melatonin is commonly recommended and may be used as a stand-alone or
combined with other ingredients. However, melatonin is not without unwanted
effects for some or has limited effectiveness.
Polyphenols such as rosmarinic acid and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG from
green tea) have promising effects on mechanisms of healthy sleep.*9,10,11,12
Polyphenol compounds may be effective at supporting sleep without significant
unwanted effects.*
Somni-Mint Rosmarinic Complex is a melatonin-free, polyphenol formula
intended to support sleep quality.*
EVIDENCE & BACKGROUND
Researchers at the University of Arizona studied a polyphenol botanical blend
containing spearmint extract and green tea extract in a double-blind, randomized
controlled trial to determine its effects on sleep and daytime functioning.13 Eightynine participants completed the 30-day trial in which they consumed 485 mg of the
proprietary blend (DailyZzTM Sleep Support) or placebo 30 minutes before bed daily.
Sleep diary including daily total sleep time, sleep onset latency, wake after sleep
onset, sleep efficiency, and daily sleep quality and morning drowsiness and activity
trackers were used to monitor sleep changes. Additionally, mood and neurocognitive
functioning was assessed via the JoggleResearch neurocognitive battery. Sleep diary
and activity tracker outcomes were assessed 5 times including baseline and baseline
and weekly thereafter. The polyphenol blend improved sleep quality (p = 0.008)
based on diaries.* No impairment in neurocognitive function was found.13
HOW IT WORKS
Rosmarinic acid supports antioxidant pathways in the brain, modulates GABA and
acetylcholine 10,11,14,15,16,17 while EGCG may affect corticosterone release to balance
the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis.*9,18
